One area Swindon Youth for Christ are passionate about is the intentional personal investment into young people. One way we achieve this is by offering mentoring through The Healthy Minds Project.
The healthy minds project is a 3 tier mentoring system that aims to equip the masses, support the groups, and walk alongside the individual.
Tier 1: This is an enrichment type of lesson that can be delivered up to 120 year 8 pupils at once. This is an interactive lesson that allows pupils to understand what it means to have a healthy mind, notice when things aren’t right, understand what are our trigger points to stress, and how to cope when things don’t go to plan.
“Alarmingly…70% of children and young people who experience a mental health problem have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.” – mentalhealth.org.uk, 30/7/20
Tier 2: This are a series of 5 lessons for groups of up to 6 pupils within each group. This series of group sessions are targeted around the specific collective issues that the group has. This is a self or school referral to the group sessions. Trained team members lead these groups in which the young people are able to journal their progress as they go through the process.
Tier 3: These are 1-1 mentoring sessions with our trained team members which last 45 mins per session. These sessions look at specific individual needs and are bespoke for the individual. Our team members are trained to use a variety of resources to allow the young person open up and communicate through a different means. Either the pupil or the school can refer individuals into tier 3. Pupils usually can stay in tier 3 for a six week period, by which an evaluation is taken. Some pupil’s may stay for an additional 6 weeks, however they will be strongly encouraged back into mainstream school. Pupils are required to keep a journal through this process.
We have put this program together to best support the students within the school environment on the topic of mental and emotional well-being, and hope that it will be a positive addition to your PSHE.
