This Sunday is Mothering Sunday, a day where we take time to honour our Mother’s, Grandmother’s, Step Mums, and female role models that have been a large part of our lives. My own very special Mum died just after my own son was born and so Mother’s Day can sometimes feel a little sad for me. I imagine there will be many people missing their loved ones this Mother’s Day, taken sadly and too soon due to the pandemic.
I remember receiving a beautiful letter from one of my Mum’s old nursing friends a few weeks after my Mum’s funeral, in it she explained how she had felt when her Mum had died at a similar time in her own life and how, although she felt the loss so cruelly, she could feel her Mum’s presence still with her in the lessons she could bring back to mind of the things her Mum had said to her and had taught her over the years. And while she was no longer there in physical form, she would remain with her for the rest of her days, in her thoughts and in her remembering’s and in the ways she had been taught. This was a great comfort to me, especially at a time when I myself was a new mum, and so in desperate need of my own Mum’s wisdom.
It has always been important to me that all that she was and taught me would not be forgotten and so she is talked about often in my household, my son knows her, he knows of her amazing kindness and generosity to others; of her creative nature; of her feisty character; of how much she loved her children and her grandchild; he knows her legacy. we will often sit and talk of her and it brings us both joy to do so.
I understand for some, this Mother’s Day will be an incredibly hard one, and so I want to send you love and I hope that taking the time to remember all the wonderful things about your Mum will bring you some comfort and maybe a little joy in the midst of the sadness. We remember God’s promise in 2 Corinthians 1:3,
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”
Motherhood is more than a stage—
it’s a lifelong calling from God.
With it He gives us hearts that love deeply,
hands that serve tirelessly, and vision to see
His blossoming image in the precious ones
